After opening with a loss to Harrisburg 64-47 in the opening round Marsh 15 at the Premiere Center, the Warrior boys ended with seventh place overall March 17 in the State AA Boys Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls.
WHS continued with a loss to O’Gorman 68-63 March 17 at the Arena. Junior Carter Schields led the scoring attack for the Warriors with 13 points. Senior Zach Heins had 10 points and seven rebounds.
On Saturday, the Warriors came back to beat Lincoln 77-73 in the seventh place game. Senior Logan Uttecht had a season high 26 points to lead all scorers in the win. Heins had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Uttecht, who was named to the All-Tournament Team following the championship, said it was an honor.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without all of the help from my coaches, teammates and family,” he said. “I am very grateful for them.”
Coach Craig Nelson said the boys fought hard and battled back.
“This is the best group of seniors I’ve had in six years of coaching,” Nelson said. “They rarely had a bad practice, always gave a great effort in the weight room and in workouts, and led this team from start to finish in every area.”
Heins said he was pleased with the season and tournament, overall.
“I love everyone on this team and I wouldn’t trade this team for anything,” Heins said.
The Warriors ended the season with a 13-10 record and will celebrate their season at their banquet on March 22.
