Leading up to the State Meet, the WHS varsity bowling teams both had high hopes for a state title, but both fell short at the event Feb. 21-22 at the Yankton Family Fun Center.
Teams began by bowling for seeding Feb. 21. The boys came out seeded No. 1 and the girls No. 3.
In the end on Friday, the varsity girls placed second, coming out of the losers bracket to bowl against Roosevelt, the No. 4 seed. The championship match was a best two-out-of-three, and the Warrior girls won that match to force a second for the championship. They couldn’t hold on, however, and ended up losing the first two games of that match to fall to the state champion Rough Riders.
The varsity boys placed third, overall. After running through the winners bracket Friday, Harrisburg finally kicked the boys into the losers bracket where they met Yankton, a team they had already beaten. Yankton was on fire on their home lanes, and the boys were unable to keep up and ended up falling to the Bucks for third. Yankton won their first state title.
Sophomore Tyler Masching was named the captain of the Boys All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Trevor Broshears and junior Miller Soutar-Bishop were also members of the five-person teams. Sophomore Rachel Spier was named to the girls All-Tournament team.
Masching said he was proud of his team.
“It was a fun weekend and a lot of good competition,” Masching said. “We didn’t do as well as we wanted, but this will be good motivation for next year.”
The teams also hosted the Annual Howie Kolhoff Tournament on Saturday at Eastway Bowl as the boys finished second and the girls in third place. The final game for the girls ended with an exciting roll-off after WHS tied the third game to decide who went to the championship game.
