Warrior girls basketball team members surged back after falling to Lincoln 55-43 March 15 during the state AA Basketball Tournament to win the Consolation Championship, or fifth place, on Saturday in Sioux Falls.
On March 16, the Warriors, led by junior Samiya Jamie, who had 20 points and eight rebounds, defeated Rapid City Stevens 56-46.
On March 17, the Warriors had a big win over O’Gorman 63-49 to finish fifth. Senior Jada Cunningham led the Warriors with 16 points and six assists while Jami had 14 points and seven rebounds to help bring the Warriors to victory. Both Cunningham and Jami were named to the All-Tournament Team at the event.
Jami said she thought the tournament was fun, overall.
“It was a good tournament,” Jami said. “It didn’t go how we wanted in the first round, but after that loss on Thursday we found out how to enjoy the weekend and end with two wins.”
Coach Jamie Parish said he is proud, and appreciative of the fans who showed up.
“Our kids showed a lot of resilience the second half of the season to earn a home game for the Round of 16 game, and then did a great job of bouncing back after a tough loss on the first day,” Parish said. “Warriors are not quitters.”
The girls ended their season with a record of 11-12 and will finish the season with a banquet on March 20 in the commons.
