If, for some reason, Miss South Dakota Teen USA cannot fulfill her duties, a WHS senior will be there to step in.
Senior Madeline Auvenshine had a busy and exciting weekend as she competed in her first pageant, chasing the title of Miss Teen South Dakota at the Brandon Valley Preforming Arts Center and finishing as first runner-up Sunday.
Over the two day pageant, Auvenshine competed in evening gown, athletic wear and interview competitions in front of a panel of six judges.
She put in seven months of work in preparation for the pageant by traveling to Minneapolis to receive coaching.
Auvenshine said the work and preparation was worth it.
“The Miss South Dakota Teen USA Pageant was an amazing experience,” Auvenshine said. “I feel so blessed to have even been a part of it.”
The pageant featured girls from all over the state. Auvenshine first made it into the top 10, then the top five before being selected as first runner-up.
It was Auvenshine’s first time participating in a pageant, and she said she was happy with her results.
“Being first runner-up is such an honor, and I was very proud of Shania Knutson for being crowned Miss South Dakota Teen USA,” Auvenshine said. "I could never have done it without the support from my best friends, family and the other competitors."
Scores to make the top five were a combination of one-third interview, evening gown and athletic wear.
Auvenshine said she hopes to return next year to compete in the Miss USA division.
